Address of the Newly Elected Patriarch Kyrill
on the Occasion of His Election by the Local Council of the Russian Orthodox Church

January 27, 2009

Your Eminences and Graces, Reverend Fathers, brothers and sisters!

It is with humility and a full understanding of my responsibilities that I accept God’s lot for me, through which is entrusted to me the Patriarchal throne. That lot is of great magnitude. That lot carries great responsibility. But at the center of that servitude is the Lord’s Cross, a Cross of such a scale, that it can only be truly known and felt by he who carries it.

I recall the words of His Holiness, Patriarch Alexey, who spoke more than once about the great Cross of Patriarchal servitude. But this Cross is carried by the Patriarchs of the Church, though no one man can withstand it. They can carry this Cross because the archpastors, pastors, and God’s flock help carry it with him. They carry this Cross because the Holy Church carries it alongside the Patriarch. And as the carrying of this Cross is shared, so is shared the responsibility, and so is shared the glory. And when kind words are spoken of the Leader of the Church, those words are directed also at God’s flock, at the clergy and the archpastors – at all those, who together with the Patriarch carry this heavy Cross and the mighty responsibility before God and history that goes with it.

In accepting from you this expression of God’s will, I ask your forgiveness for my weaknesses, ask you to help me by your advice, ask you to stand next to me in carrying the Cross of Patriarchal servitude. But more than all these, I ask for your prayers – prayers such as those which, I am sure, those people who took part in the decisions of our Local Council, along with many others, poured out from their loving and faithful hearts.

May the Lord bless our Church, our people, those countries in which the Russian Orthodox Church does Her work, and everyone, who by their prayers and efforts brought this hour nearer. Again and again I ask you to remember me in your holy prayers. Amen.
