On Thursday, January 19, on the great feast of the Theophany of our Lord Jesus Christ, parishioners of St. Nicholas Church held the fifth annual blessing of the Navesink River.

On Wednesday evening, parish rector Fr. Serge led the All-Night Vigil. The following morning, Fr. Serge, co-served by parish cleric Archpriest Boris Oparin, celebrated the festal Divine Liturgy. Many of those present partook of Christ’s Holy Mysteries, and upon completion of the Liturgy, Fr. Serge performed the rite of the Great Blessing of the Water. Parishioners then processed to the nearby shore of the Navesink River, where the rector blessed the waters. Two parishioners, Vasily and Viktor, braved the cold weather to jump into the sanctified river. In years past, the river has been blessed by both Metropolitan Hilarion, First Hierarch of the Russian Church Abroad, and Bishop Jerome, Vicar of the Eastern American Diocese.

Reporters from the Asbury Park Press were in attendance, and spoke with parishioners and the two divers about their impressions of the feast. Click here for photographs.

From Friday the 6th to Monday the 8th of January, parishioners of St. George’s and St. Nicholas Churches celebrated the joyous feast of the Nativity of the Lord. The festal divine services were held in St. George’s Church, attended by a multitude of the faithful. On January 6, the Royal Hours and Vespers with Liturgy were served, followed by the festal Compline and Matins in the evening. On January 7, the rector, Archpriest Serge Lukianov, celebrated the Divine Liturgy, co-served by Archpriest Boris Oparin and Deacon Leonid Roschko. Upon completion of the Nativity Liturgy, the faithful gathered together to sing Christmas carols and congratulate one another on Christ’s Nativity.

On Sunday, January 8, on the second day of the feast, the Divine Liturgy was celebrated, followed by a parish Yolka in the Cossack hall. To the joy of all the parishioners, a large group of children from the recently founded parish of St. Joasaph of Belgorod in Brooklyn came to perform a Christmas play. Since the parish was only formed several weeks ago and has yet to obtain its own church building, parishioners of St. Joasaph of Belgorod Church, headed by the rector, Fr. Boris, took part in the festal divine services in St. George’s Church.

The rector, clergy, and the entire parish council congratulate our readers with the radiant and joyous feast of the Nativity of our Lord! May the Newborn Savior grant us all joy and goodness in 2012.

What is the Orthodox Church?

The Eastern Orthodox Church is the Church that Jesus Christ established in Palestine 2,000 years ago.

The Christianity that we in America and Europe know is that which moved from the Middle East, where Christianity began, to the West; to Rome, Europe, and America. We know how the faith and practice in these western lands changed, leading eventually to the Protestant Reformation. Later non-denominational Churches also tried to determine from the Bible what the Ancient Church “must” have been like. Unhappily, different people reading the same Bible understand it differently, and now there are hundreds of quite different denominations of Churches in the West.

But what happened to Christianity in the East, where Jesus Christ established it? What of the Christians in Jerusalem, in Alexandria, Antioch, and Constantinople – all of the major centers of the Faith other than Rome in the earliest years of Christianity? All of them were founded directly by the Apostles, blessed to do so by Jesus Christ. Did these Christians follow along the same road as the Roman Church?

Western teachings of Purgatory, the selling of “indulgences” to get out of Purgatory, the Supremacy of the Pope, the infallibility of the Pope, the subtle change of the fundamental statement of Christian Faith (the Creed) of the early Church, none of these “innovations” of the Roman Church were ever accepted or taught in the East. There was no Protestant Reformation in the East, because there was no need for one. No one had to break away, or try to decipher from the Bible what the New Testament Church probably would have been like before the Roman Church changed it, because in the East, it hadn’t changed. There was no need to resurrect the ancient Faith, because in the East, it never died!

The Church that Jesus Christ founded in the East is still alive, still filled and guided by the Holy Spirit, still maintains an unbroken, living connection straight back to the Apostles, and to Jesus Christ Himself. We invite you to explore this Church, and to join us!
