January
19th, 2009
On Monday, January 19th, on the great Feastday of the Baptism of Our
Lord, His Grace, Bishop Jerome of Manhattan, visited St. Nicholas
church and led the Divine Liturgy. Co-serving with His Grace were the
parish clergy, Fr. Serge, Fr. Evtihiy, and Fr. Leonid. At the
conclusion of the Liturgy, the rite of the Great Blessing of the
Waters was performed, after which occurred a festive procession
through the streets of Red Bank to the Navesink River. Taking part in
the procession was His Honor, Mayor Pasquale Menna, and other
representatives of Red Bank's municipal government, along with members
of the Kuban Cossacks. On the bank of the river His Grace blessed the
water alongside the clergy and the cossacks. According to the old
Russian custom, after the blessing of the waters, one parishioner had
water from the river poured over him; in another ancient Epiphany
tradition, the clergy and children then released doves. Upon the
procession's return to the church, the rector greeted the bishop,
while on behalf of the city the mayor greeted his Grace, thanking him
for his visit to Red Bank. Fr. Serge also thanked the commodore and
administrators of the North Shrewsbury Ice Boat & Yacht Club and
the Monmouth Boat Club for their help in preparing for the feastday.
On behalf of the parish, His Grace blessed the warden of St. George
church, John Rimakis, granting him an icon on the occasion of his
namesday. A holiday luncheon was served in the church hall.
